The torch has now been passed to the James Webb Space Telescope which was launched on December 25, 2021. The James Webb Space Telescope will allow us to look back in time to 100 million years after the Big Bang when the first stars and galaxies began to form. The piece is a cappella (optional divisi) and based on an ostinato in the basses that represents the monotony of isolation, with our individual experiences represented through cascading counterpoint. A middle section is chorale-like, representing our coming together with hope for the future, but then a return to the monotony, ending with a lonely soprano section singing “awaiting…” This piece was premiered by Te Deum.
